Castelnau-de-MontmiralOccitaniaCastelnau-de-Montmiral is a bastide perched above the Vère. Stand in the arcaded square by the old pillory, stop for a croustade, then walk into the Forêt de la Grésigne, a vast oak forest to the north. Next, Puycelsi.

Castles, pilgrims and the river Garonne

BruniquelOccitaniaBruniquel is crowned by a pair of castles over the Aveyron. Step onto the Renaissance gallery of the old one, which hangs over the valley, and see the prehistory museum in the younger castle. Then on to Lauzerte.

Lauzerte is a stop on the pilgrim road to Santiago. Look for the merchants' houses with their arched shop doorways, and the seneschal's court above its vaulted cellar, then take a coffee break before going on to Auvillar.

Day 3
The pilgrim road and round bastides of Gascony

Walled Gascon villages, then back to Toulouse
