Cistercian monks settled in Follina in the 12th century and brought wool-working with them; the village takes its name from fulling cloth, and its workshops were imitating fine English fabrics by the 1680s. The abbey of Santa Maria, with its cloister finished in 1268, is still the heart of the place. Follina lies where the Soligo turns south below the Venetian Prealps, on the Prosecco wine route.
