Asolo
Member of I Borghi più belli d'Italia
Venice gave Asolo to Caterina Cornaro, the former Queen of Cyprus, in 1489, and her court here drew poets and artists, Pietro Bembo among them. The walled town runs along a hilltop under Monte Ricco and its medieval Rocca, looking over the Veneto plain; Carducci called it the city of a hundred horizons. Eleonora Duse and Freya Stark both lived here and are buried at Sant'Anna.
