Salt made this village's fortune: its springs were worked from before Roman times, and the last salt pan closed only in 1974. Poza clings to a hillside below the castle of the Rojas, with steep lanes of stone and half-timbered houses inside medieval walls, and a square so open to the plains below that the village is called the balcony of La Bureba.

Highlights

  • The salt pans, where spring water evaporated on wooden and stone platforms
  • The castle of the Rojas, high on the slope above the village
  • Medieval walls, five metres high, entered by three gates
  • Church of San Cosme y San Damián above the old market square
  • The old Santander–Mediterráneo railway line, now a greenway (ES)
