Often called Spain's smallest city, a title granted in 1435, Frías climbs the crag of La Muela above the Ebro, guarding a crossing between the Cantabrian coast and the plateau. Houses of tufa and timber lean on one another and in places hang from the rock, rising to the Velasco castle and the church of San Vicente. Below, a medieval bridge with a toll tower spans the river.

Highlights

  • Velasco castle on La Muela, overlooking the valley and the bridge
  • The nine-arched medieval bridge with its 14th-century defensive toll tower
  • Hanging houses forming streets on two levels, some clinging to the rock
  • Fiesta del Capitán, recalling the townspeople's 1450 revolt
  • Vegetables from the Ebro riverside gardens: lettuces, tomatoes and peppers
