A small figure holding a rainbow, the Indalo, was once painted on Mojácar's house fronts to ward off the evil eye; artists who settled here in the 1960s turned it into the emblem of all Almería. The white village sits on a steep hill above the Mediterranean, its car-free centre a tangle of narrow streets and stairways. Each June, Moros y Cristianos recalls the town's peaceful surrender in 1488.
