Maderuelo
Member of Los Pueblos más Bonitos de España
The Romanesque frescoes of Maderuelo's Vera Cruz chapel have hung in the Prado in Madrid since 1947. The walled village runs along a hilltop ringed by the Linares reservoir, whose waters drowned an old bridge, and vultures circle over the nearby gorges of the Riaza. A medieval festival takes over in August, and a trebuchet stands beside the church for the occasion.
