ZaratemanCaleruega - Convento de los Dominicos 3CC0

Saint Dominic, founder of the Dominican Order, was born in this Castilian village in 1170, and in 1266 his family's manor became a monastery of Dominican nuns. The Guzmán tower survives from the walled settlement of the Reconquest, and caves in the limestone hills now serve as wine cellars. Caleruega lies where the Sierra de la Demanda meets the Ribera del Duero, inside the wine appellation.

Highlights

  • Torreón de los Guzmanes, the medieval tower at the heart of the village
  • Royal monastery of Dominican nuns, founded on Saint Dominic's family home
  • Church of San Sebastián, with its original Romanesque tower and doorway arch
  • Caves of the Peña de San Jorge, now mostly wine cellars
  • Ribera del Duero wines
