Saint Hugh of Cluny was born here in 1024, and the chef Albert Roux of Le Gavroche in 1935. The village stands on a limestone hill about 400 metres up, above the narrow valley of the Merdasson, and keeps a remarkable medieval group: the 9th-century Château Saint-Hugues, said to be Burgundy's oldest castle, and the 12th-century collegiate church of Saint-Hilaire, with stretches of rampart around them.

Highlights

  • Château Saint-Hugues, a 9th-century castle
  • The 12th-century collegiate church of Saint-Hilaire (FR)
  • The chapter house, with an exhibition on Romanesque building in the Brionnais
  • The chapel of Saint-Martin-la-Vallée
  • The Forêt des Charmays, a state forest north of the Murdin stream
