Nuevo Baztán

Juan de Goyeneche, royal treasurer and publisher, built Nuevo Baztán from scratch between 1709 and 1713 as a village for the workers of his new glassworks, naming it after his native valley in Navarre. José Benito Churriguera designed the palace, church and grid of streets, an early experiment in the industrial village. The palace's old wine cellars now house an interpretation centre.
Highlights
- Palacio de Goyeneche, with its church of San Francisco Javier
- The two squares beside the palace-church, protected since 1941
- Interpretation centre in the palace wine cellars
- Two notable trees: the Nuevo Baztán elm and the palace garden's Aleppo pine
