The bishops of Ávila ruled this small mountain town above the Corneja valley for centuries, and walled it in the early 14th century. Their castle sheltered King Juan II and his court in 1440, and the scholar-bishop Alonso de Madrigal, known as El Tostado, died here in 1455. Later bishops kept returning for cool summers at 1,079 metres.

Highlights

  • The bishops' castle, where Juan II and his court stayed in 1440
  • Prehistoric rock altars with carved steps on the hill of Navalterrero
  • Canto del Mortero, a granite outcrop cut with Bronze Age footholds
  • Mountain country rising to Cabeza Mesa, 1,545 metres
