High on a promontory where the Cinca and Ara rivers meet, the walled old town is little more than two near-parallel streets running into the Plaza Mayor, with the castle's wide esplanade beyond. Aínsa was once capital of the county of Sobrarbe, and its 11th-century castle and Romanesque church of Santa María date from that time. Today it is a base for canyoning, rafting and Pyrenean walks.

Highlights

  • The castle, begun in the 11th century, with its large parade ground (ES)
  • Romanesque church of Santa María, consecrated in 1181, with an arrow-slit bell tower
  • The Cruz Cubierta, a 1665 shrine marking the legend of a fiery cross
  • Eco-museum on Pyrenean wildlife and the bearded vulture, inside the castle walls
  • Canyoning, via ferrata and rafting in the surrounding mountains
