    Pilgrim steps and mountain stone under the Gran Sasso

      Begin in Campli with the Scala Santa, whose frescoed steps pilgrims climb on their knees. Stroll the ridge-top streets to the Palazzo Farnese, then taste the truffles of the area before turning towards the mountains and Pietracamela.

      Pietracamela sits under a huge rock on the flank of the Gran Sasso. Climb its stepped lanes between tall stone houses, look for the coats of arms over the doorways, and eat the region's arrosticini before settling in here for the night.

    Painted maiolica and brick towns above the Adriatic

      Day two begins in Castelli, a village of potters. Step into San Donato to see its ceiling of maiolica tiles and browse the workshops along the lanes, then on to Penne.

      Next comes Penne, the town of bricks, where even the paving is brick. Visit the cathedral of San Massimo and its crypt, then pause for the region's spaghetti alla chitarra before the last stop at Città Sant'Angelo.

      Città Sant'Angelo ends the loop along a long main street of brick houses, with blind alleys branching off. Look at the carved portal of the Collegiata, visit the contemporary art museum, and then drive down towards the coast and Pescara.
