      Start beneath the chalk cliff, where the Château de La Roche-Guyon rises beside the Seine. Wander its kitchen garden of triangular beds and, if you have the energy, take the steps up to the keep on the clifftop. Then set off for Gerberoy.

      Gerberoy is a small hilltop village, so leave the car and wander among the half-timbered houses to the Collégiale Saint-Pierre. Visit the Henri Le Sidaner gardens in the old fortress ruins. Sample a Maroilles, the region's cheese, then head back to Beauvais.
