Legend credits Hercules with founding Tropea, whose old town crowns a sheer rock some 60 metres above the Tyrrhenian Sea. Below lie the beaches and harbour, and the sanctuary of Santa Maria dell'Isola rises from a promontory that was once cut off from the mainland. The local red onion turns up on pizzas and in jams, and on 28 August the sun sets into Stromboli's crater.
