The fortress crowning San Leo's sheer rock spur was rebuilt for Federico da Montefeltro by Francesco di Giorgio Martini, and later became a prison for Cagliostro and Felice Orsini. Below it, the old capital of the Montefeltro, visited by Saint Francis and Dante, keeps a Romanesque cathedral rebuilt around 1173 and the pieve of Santa Maria Assunta. Umberto Eco called it the most beautiful town in Italy.
