Montecchio
Member of I Borghi più belli d'Italia
Around 1165 the Chiaravalle family built a castle here as a refuge for Ghibellines expelled from Todi, and the village grew outward in rings of houses around that fortified core. Montecchio lies in the Tiber valley in southern Umbria, where Etruscan chamber tombs line the San Lorenzo ravine and truffles, some weighing more than 200 grams, are a lively trade.
