Fornelli still looks like the walled village it was, its circuit of round watchtowers entered through the gateway of a 17th-century fortified palace where Charles III of Bourbon stayed in 1744. It sits on a hill skirted by the Vandra stream, and its olive oil has earned it the title of Città dell'Olio. A torchlit walk each October remembers six men hanged here in 1943.
