Turenne
Member of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France
For centuries the viscounts of Turenne ran a near-independent state from this limestone hill, coining money and raising their own taxes until the domain was sold to Louis XV in 1738. Houses from the 13th to the 17th century climb towards what is left of the fortress, the César tower and the Clock Tower, with the Tourmente valley spread out below.
Highlights
- The 12th-century César tower and 14th-century Clock Tower, last pieces of the fortress
- Streets of houses from the 13th to 17th centuries and several noble residences
- Fossil scallop shells at the foot of the village, left by an ancient sea
- The church with its 17th-century altar
- Local walnuts, mushrooms, truffles and foie gras
