Carennac
Member of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France
Carennac grew up around a Cluniac priory founded in the 11th century on a rocky terrace above the Dordogne. Its Romanesque church of Saint-Pierre has a 12th-century tympanum of Christ in majesty, and the cloister shelters a late 15th-century Entombment. Fénelon served as dean here in the 1680s, and tradition says he wrote his Adventures of Telemachus here, facing an island named Calypso.
