The painter Henri Martin first drew artists to Saint-Cirq-Lapopie, and in the 1950s the poet André Breton spent time here too. The village sits on a sheer cliff 100 metres above the Lot, a site chosen for defence when it was the seat of one of Quercy's four viscounties. Today its lanes draw large crowds, and a towpath along the river leads to the Ganil lock.

Highlights

  • Church of Saint-Cirq-et-Sainte-Juliette, Romanesque and Gothic, from the later 12th century
  • Maison Henri Martin, also linked to André Breton, on Place du Carol
  • Musée Rignault
  • The towpath beside the Lot to the Ganil lock
  • A stage on the Via Podiensis pilgrim route to Santiago
