Strung along a ridge above a bend in the Aveyron, Najac runs from a partly ruined castle at one end to a bastide faubourg of timber-framed houses and arcades at the other. Villagers built the castle in 1253 on the orders of Alphonse de Poitiers, and the church of Saint-Jean too, imposed on them as a punishment for Cathar beliefs.
