Two rivers meet below Limeuil, the Dordogne and the Vézère, and that confluence made its fortune as boatmen loaded wine onto flat-bottomed gabares bound for Bordeaux. The village climbs a promontory inside its old walls, three of whose four gates survive, up to a church dedicated to Saint Catherine, patron of boat people. By the water, the restaurant L'Ancre de Salut keeps the boatmen's name for a safe haven.
