Le Poët-Laval
Member of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France
Long a commandery of the Knights Hospitaller, Le Poët-Laval is still crowned by their 12th-century castle, and its name means 'the little hill in the valley'. The medieval upper village, largely closed to cars, overlooks newer houses along the Jabron in the Drôme provençale. A museum of Dauphiné Protestantism fills the 17th-century temple and marks the start of a 2,000 km trail following the Huguenots into exile.
