White half-timbered houses with open yards onto working farms give Hunspach its look, and in 2020 it was voted France's favourite village. Destroyed by imperial troops in 1633, it was rebuilt by Swiss settlers and stayed Protestant. Nearby lies the Schœnenbourg fort, a Maginot Line work that held out until after the 1940 armistice.
