Saint Martin of Tours founded a parish here in the late 4th century and died here in 397, and the village has been a place of pilgrimage ever since. From a steep slope it overlooks the meeting of the Vienne and the Loire. The collegiate church that rose over Martin's monastery is known for its sculpted decoration, and the archbishops of Tours kept a summer residence beside it.
