Ferdinand the Catholic was born here in 1452, in the Palacio de los Sada, and his birth gave Sos the second half of its name. The town stands on a rocky spur on the old border between Navarre and Aragon, its walls still entered through seven gates. Inside are a medieval Jewish quarter, the arcaded Plaza de la Villa and a castle keep looking out to the Pyrenees.

Highlights

  • Palacio de los Sada, Ferdinand's birthplace, now a centre on his life
  • The castle keep on Peña Felizana, with views of Pyrenean peaks
  • Plaza de la Villa, where the medieval market's scale and length measure were checked
  • Jewish quarter around Plaza de la Sartén, with a doorway mezuzah slot
  • Berlanga's film La vaquilla, shot here in 1985 with locals as extras (ES)
