Garachico
Member of Los Pueblos más Bonitos de España
Until 1706 Garachico was Tenerife's leading port, shipping wine and sugar to Europe and the Americas; then lava from the Trevejo volcano poured into the bay and buried the harbour. Founded by the Genoese banker Cristóbal de Ponte after the conquest of 1496, the town sits on the north coast below a high cliff, facing the rocky islet that gave it its name.
