The Spengenberg counts, who came from Carinthia, gave the town its name, and their castle still stands at the edge of the Tagliamento, rebuilt in Renaissance style after a fire in 1511. Corso Roma runs past multicoloured façades and the Casa Dipinta, frescoed with scenes from the life of Hercules, to a 13th-century cathedral. The town is home to the Mosaic School of Friuli, founded in 1922.
