In 1579 Giulio Cesare Gonzaga set out to turn Pomponesco into his 'ideal city', and the squared Gonzaga plan still frames a broad square at the foot of the Po embankment. The hexagonal castle has gone, its bricks used in 1818 to strengthen the river bank, but the square has drawn film-makers from Bertolucci to the last Don Camillo.
