Six medieval gates once led into Pettorano sul Gizio, a village on the Gizio river whose castle was enlarged by Charles of Anjou in the 13th century. After the Majella earthquake of 1706 it was rebuilt as an 18th-century village, with baroque palaces for the Cantelmo stewards and local families. It also keeps the only Greek fragment of Diocletian's price edict found in the West.

Highlights

  • The castle keep: square plan, four round towers and a central square one
  • Palazzo La Castaldina, with a 1794 baroque façade and private chapel
  • Porta San Nicola, with a 1656 fresco of Saint Margaret holding the town
  • A 14th-century painted wooden crucifix in the parish church
  • The fragment of Diocletian's Edict on Maximum Prices
