Montemerano

In the church of San Giorgio hangs the Madonna della Gattaiola, the 'Virgin of the cat flap', by a painter remembered only as the Master of Montemerano. The village rises on a hill just south of the spa at Saturnia, built by the Aldobrandeschi and turned into a fortress by Siena. A short, steep lane ends at an arch opening on to Piazza del Castello and its stone houses.
