Montaione
Member of I Borghi più belli d'Italia
Local legend says a young noble of Volterra named Ajone founded the village after rescuing a stolen bride, a tale Michelangelo Buonarroti the Younger retold in verse during a stay here in 1623. Set in the Florentine Valdelsa near the border with the province of Pisa, Montaione once had furnaces making glass beakers and is ringed by a scatter of old castles.
