La Maddalena
Member of I Borghi più belli d'Italia
Reached only by boat from Palau, this is the largest town of a granite archipelago in the Strait of Bonifacio. It grew up after a Savoy garrison arrived in 1767, and life still gathers around Piazza Umberto I and the shops and bars of Via Garibaldi. From the harbour, boats head out to the islands of a national park, while a causeway leads to Caprera, Garibaldi's last home.
