The name may come from the infernòt, small wine cellars dug by hand into the soft local stone, and several can still be visited on guided tours. Cella Monte's houses are built of Pietra da Cantoni, a yellowish stone laid down in an ancient sea, and the village sits in the heart of the Monferrato wine landscapes listed by UNESCO in 2014.
