Diodorus Siculus was born in Agira, which crowns Monte Teja above the Salso valley and Lake Pozzillo on the site of ancient Agyrion. Excavations by the castle have found Greek houses and a mint, and among its many churches the Santissimo Salvatore keeps a stone Aron, dated 1454, from the town's old synagogue.

Highlights

  • The stone Aron dated 1454 in the church of the Santissimo Salvatore
  • The Royal Abbey of San Filippo, with a wooden crucifix by Frate Umile
  • The castle on the summit, with two towers still standing
  • Birdlife around Lake Pozzillo and its eucalyptus wood
  • Santa Margherita, the diocese's largest church, with thirteen altars
