Mortemart
Member of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France
The smallest commune in Haute-Vienne grew up around a feudal mound and a stone castle that the lord Abon Drut built in 995, in the Monts de Blond, the first hills of the Massif Central to pass 400 metres when coming from the Atlantic. The English destroyed that castle in the 14th century; its successor, raised on another site, was later dismantled on the orders of Louis XIII.
