Sailcloth woven from local hemp made Locronan rich, and the merchants' granite houses with slate roofs still frame its paved square, its well and the church of Saint-Ronan, built between 1430 and 1480. The town is named after an Irish hermit, and each July pilgrims walk the Troménie, a procession that becomes a 12 km circuit once every six years. Roman Polanski filmed Tess here.
