Château-Chalon
Member of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France
Vin jaune from the slopes below Château-Chalon is reckoned the finest in the Jura and bears the village's name. The houses line a plateau edge: a sheer cliff drops to the Haute-Seille valley on the west, while vineyards slope gently away to the east. For over a millennium an abbey stood here, first for Benedictine nuns, then for canonesses of high noble birth, beside the stone-roofed church of Saint-Pierre.
